The International Day of the Girl Child – now celebrated annually on 11 October – promotes girls’ empowerment and draws attention to the challenges they face. The 2012 inaugural Day focuses on child marriage, a fundamental rights violation that affects every facet of a girl’s life.

(Second from right) Munni, 18, in Rajasthan State in India, was arranged to be married at 17 but persuaded her father to postpone her wedding until she was of legal age. Her mother is a women’s advocate.
