International Literacy Day – held each year on 8 September – celebrates literacy as a basic human right. Begun by UNESCO (the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) in 1965, the event heralds a new theme annually, this year’s being the importance of literacy to achieving peace. Literacy lies at the core of many of the child rights UNICEF works to protect, including the rights to education and expression.
